How do you tell people your a furry?

I'm new to the fandom.  No one in RL knows that I'm a furry yet, but I want to tell people.  I'm not sure how though, because I'm afraid that many people in my area either A) Don't know what a furry is, and/or B) will tell me I'm crazy and need to go somewhere or something...   Any advice?  Thanks.

I've yet to tell anyone I know IRL either, though I came very close to telling my best friend. He knows all about furries and apparently looks at furry art on deviantart, because he kept telling me about this guy named Jax the Bat.

Maybe you should just casually bring up the subject of furries to your friends. Just see if they know what they are, and if they have know clue, just kind of explain it to them. However, don't make it obvious that you might, in fact, be a furry. If they are like "z0mg fr3aks!1!" then maybe you should give it some time. But if they seem understanding or even interested, then you will probably have an easier time admitting your furrydom to them.

Nothing unusual about that. About the only suggestion here would be to curb the newbie's enthusiasm so's you don't get the reputation of being a bit of a "bore". In RL, most people really don't care all that much, but they don't appreciate heavy proselytization either.

First of all, decide if they really have a need to know. If they don't know who Furries are, and they don't seem to indicate any Fur-inclination, then they probably don't need to know. If the subject should come up somehow, then you could casually mention it. Although be prepared for some false positives. Just because you see someone wearing a collar, doesn't mean that they're necessarily Furs. Also, some Fur-speak has escaped the fandom. They use words like "spooge" without knowing where that came from. Generally, if you don't make a big deal of it then they won't either.

Basically, I do nothing to advertise my fandom affiliation, and I don't do anything to hide it either.

That's rule of thumb for anything about yourself if you know people will look badly at it even though you know there is nothing wrong.

I've been a furry all my life but I didn’t really know what I was until I was 13. I've been hiding the fact that I’m a furry for 2 years. Now I'm 15 and still kind of new to the fandom. I recently decided to come clean and tell my friends, sadly only one of them had any idea of what a furry is. When I explained it to them they were totally cool with it and life went on as normal except now I have some friend that I can talk to about the fandom. The only big challenge I have left to face is telling my parents. I think my mom will take the news well, but I’m not sure how my dad will react. I believe it will all work out if I take my time and chouse the right moment to tell them. Most of the time friends really understand and trust me when I say, if you tell them you’ll feel a lot better.   =^.^=

Well pretty much all of my online friends know I am a furry now, and I actually feel really great about it. A couple were shocked (though I don't see how, considering I go by the name Garuru_The_Wolf and have wolf sigs and avatars just about everywhere). The only problem now is on the site I moderate someone keeps posting Fredryk Phox videos, and that guy really makes it hard on furries 

I'm seriously considering telling my best friend next time he calls, since he understands has knowledge of the fandom and even admitted that he likes the art.
